Wine, War, and the Drouhin house

2 pm for a maximum of 10 participants
65 € Inc.VAT / person

Join us for this exclusive tour which combines the visit of the unique and prestigious cellars of the Drouhin family, combining a visit with private access to the Hospices de Beaune, including areas not normally open to the public; based on the true story of Maurice Drouhin and his courageous activities during the 2nd World War.  This tour is limited to 10 people only and costs € 65 per person.

Rendez-vous at the Oenothèque: Here you will embark upon a 3 hour tour, taking you through nearly 2000 years of history, as you are taken through a memorable journey of hope, courage and ingenuity.

You will start by seeing the area of the cellars which were walled during the 2nd world war to protect the Drouhin family's finest wines, and then the cellar and old door through which Maurice Drouhin fled from the Gestapo in June 1945.

From there, you will be escorted to the Hotel-Dieu, Hospices de Beaune for a guided tour of this remarkable example of medieval architecture.  The hospital was founded in 1443, and was the main hospital in Beaune for a further 500 years ; most of the Drouhin family  being born there.  It is now most famous for housing the annual charity wine auction in November each year.

After visiting the public areas, you will be allowed private access to the 'Chambre du Roy', or 'King's chamber' and also the fascinating archive room, hidden behind an impressive iron door.  You will see where Maurice Drouhin was hidden by the nuns until the liberation of Beaune.

We return to the Drouhin winery to continue with the discovery of the maze of cellars which cover more than 2 acres beneath the town of Beaune, and your experience will culminate with a tasting of several fine wines including the Hospices de Beaune, 1er cru 'Cuvée Maurice Drouhin'.  This wine comes from the vineyard donated to the Hospices de Beaune  at the end of the war, by Maurice Drouhin, as a thank you for harbouring him during those dangerous times.
